THE HISTORY AND THEOLOGY OF THE CHURCH IN AFRICA

From the earliest times of Christ, several Christian churches have sprung up in the African continent. This course runs on the trail of the Gospel through Africa. The ecclesiastical and ethical questions that the churches in Africa have grappled with are analysed from primary sources and approached with a biblical perspective.

Students are equipped with a comprehensive understanding of important events that shaped the church in the Mediterranean world until about 800 AD. The history of the church along the Nile River and its presence in Nubia and Ethiopia is examined. This includes exploring encounters with Islam as a post-Christian religion.

This is followed by an overview of the history of the sub-Saharan church since 1480. The course delves into the profound influence of colonialism and the subsequent process of decolonisation during the 20th century. The decolonisation of Africa and its influence on the relationship between church and state, as well as the associated rise of African independent churches, are discussed.

The development of the church in South Africa, with a special focus on the history of the Reformed churches, concludes the course.
